Puerto Viejo

After the mini lesson, Chris, Eric, Leon and I got a cab ride with Leo, the taxi driver who works for Maximo nivel and went to the Caribe bus station. I slept the whole 4 hours until we arrived to the lower east side of the country, a town called Puerto Viejo not too far above Panama. We got some typical costa rican food at the Sunrise Soda, my rice and beans weren't too great but Eric's seafood soup was impressive.

That evening we walked down to the beach after settling into our hostel, Rockin Js. The ocean at night was calming and the sky with palm trees was amazing. After being in San Jose for a week, we were reminded that This is why we had come to Costa Rica.

The boys went off to their hammocks and I to my tent. ($6, $7 a night, respectively)

That morning we walked through the jungle for 10 mintes and arrived at Playa Cocles and the hostel dog, Jazzy, followed us. The boys went swimming despite the strong rip tide and I did some yoga. We then met up with a surfer from the Peace Corps and had breakfast with him at a local Soda.

This is a traditional dish called a Casado-rice beans and meat, this one is influenced by the Caribbean and includes pasta and a boiled banana.

That afternoon was spent preparing for Halloween. J of Rockin Js mandated a costume for everyone and brought out a chest of things to choose from. An older rather batty lady named Mary brought out a collection of costume jewelry that she said she had to get rid of before traveling on. She was obviously a former dramatic actress and apparently had some rare type of mental disorder, she was coherent just rambling. She enjoyed shaking a tamborine and babbling. That night there was a big halloween party. A bunch of other TEFL people and Maximo volunteers had come down to join so it was a great time of meeting new people.
Picture of Chris and crazy Mary, then a bunch of us for halloween-I was an Indian princess thanks to Mary's fake rhinestones.
